If you’ve made the decision to enhance your lips, you’ve probably noticed that there are a few different options to choose from.

There are a number of different augmentation procedures available to you but not every type of procedure is right for everyone.

To make the best decision though, it helps to know what options are available to you, to begin with.

Lip augmentation options

Below are the treatments that can be used to enhance the shape and size of your lips.

Fillers

Dermal fillers are one of the easiest and most popular ways to add more volume to your lips.

The most commonly used fillers contain a substance called hyaluronic acid, which occurs naturally in the body and is FDA approved.

Hyaluronic acid fillers are one of the safer options and last considerably longer than fillers from previous generations. While the results of these fillers are not permanent, you will be able to enjoy the effects of the injections within 24 hours.

Fillers are ideal for patients who want instant results with very little recovery time and side effects. Patients can expect some minor bruising, redness and swelling after their procedure but this subsides really quickly and can be covered with makeup.

One of the biggest benefits of using hyaluronic acid fillers is that the results can be reversed should you not be happy with them.

Implants

If you’re looking for a more permanent solution, implants can also be used to enhance the size and shape of the lips.

Implant materials include saline, polymers and collagen as they’re able to mimic the natural tissue in the lips. Each implant has a smooth surface that won’t rupture or deflate. The entire procedure won’t take longer than an hour to perform and the implants can be removed if necessary.

Any swelling and bruising that’s experienced after the procedure will be gone in about a week. Overall, recovery takes about a month.

Lip Lift

If you want to shorten the distance between your upper lip and the base of your nose, a lip lift is the ideal procedure.

After a lip lift, the upper lip will also naturally turn outwards, leaving you with a more prominent cupid’s bow. A lip lift is performed under local anaesthetic and a small incision will be required. Fortunately, the incision is barely visible.

Since this is a surgical procedure, swelling and at least a week of downtime can be expected.

Lip Reduction

Whether your lips are naturally large or you’re unhappy with the results of a past lip augmentation treatment, a lip reduction procedure can be performed.

Lip reduction procedures can be performed on the lower or upper lips and require a local anaesthetic. Patients can also expect swelling for several weeks and at least a week of downtime following their procedure. Any pain can be managed with over-the-counter pain medications and ice packs.
